If young people engage in substance use, such as alcohol or drug consumption, and attract the attention of, for example, the police, the school, or coworkers, a “health-related intervention” follows. That’s when the FreD course comes in.

The FreD course consists of guided conversations, interactive exercises, knowledge-based games, and reflective activities, all led by trained coaches. The program gives adolescents the opportunity to reassess their drug use early on and reflect on the factors that led them down this path.

Yellow Tree was commissioned to digitize the established FreD courses and offer them in an interactive app.

The goal

FreD’s goal is to provide a supportive app for adolescents, which gives them access to information about addiction issues and helps them build a healthy understanding of alcohol, drugs, and gaming addictions. The app is designed to equip young people with practical tools to overcome addiction, encourage dialog, and answer questions.

The brand FreD

The entire visual identity of the FreD brand underwent a complete reorientation. FreD’s character and values were redefined, and the foundation for the positioning of the brand was laid in several workshops. The new branding is motivating, cheerful, and avoids dark colors and a moralizing undertone. The new design aims to motivate adolescents and encourage participation through the use of colors and shapes.

The app

Adolescents can now easily experience the course content alone or in a group, regardless of their location. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices, in order to not exclude anyone. The use of feedback mechanisms promotes motivation and active engagement among the youth.

The UI design

The UI design contains many interactive elements, which actively engage users, encouraging participation through quizzes, interactive questions, and other playful features. The UI design is dynamic, intuitive, and visually appealing in order to capture the attention of young people and promote their involvement. Short, concise texts tailored to the target audience facilitate comprehension and ensure that information can be grasped quickly.

Flexible content compilation

The app allows coaches to compile seminars in advance via the backend, enabling them to create individual courses. Yellow Tree developed the entire system architecture as a headless solution, allowing maximum flexibility in adding content and modules. While creating new courses, the dashboard supports the assembling process by displaying the duration of each module and providing a preview.

Coaches also have the option to present selected scenes or content through a separate view, for example via a projector, which increases participant engagement.

System architecture

The backend runs on a Node server. We use GraphQL in combination with Apollo and Express to enable efficient data querying and manipulation. This allows us to perform complex queries and data operations with high flexibility and scalability. We use React.js on the frontend, React Native for mobile interaction and integrated the FreD online Portal into the existing blu:app.
